Tension and conflict in the relationship due to any of a number of factors such as financial problems, value conflicts, long periods of separation, in law problems, and career problems.

Critical life events such as illness or accident, death, being uprooted, a shift in status, personal failure, life transitions, substance abuse,  may have knocked you off balance and contribute to the affair.

Individual character issues predisposing someone to extramarital affairs.

One partner feeling that his / her needs are not being met.

Emotional emptiness can lead to adultery

Need for sexual variety,

Inability to resist new sexual opportunity

Anger at a partner

No longer being "in love"

Alcohol or drug addiction

Growing apart

Desire to get a partner jealous.

Failure or rejection on any front can make you or your spouse more vulnerable to an affair.

Surprisingly, success is also a risk factor because it increases attractiveness to others.

Lack of conflict resolution skills
